Manchester legal ‘heroes’ head south

Three Manchester-based Legal Executives have been chosen to be among just 50 ‘National Pro Bono Heroes’ from the legal profession in England and Wales to attend a reception in the House of Commons in London to mark National Pro Bono Week.

Michael McGhie and Doug Chisholm from the central Manchester law firm, Pannone and Victoria Martin from Sheldon Davidson in Whitefield will be travelling to London on Tuesday 11 November to explain to MPs of all parties about the pro bono work they do for the Bury Law Centre.

It has been just three years since the Bury Law Centre successfully opened its doors for business and the three Pro Bono Heros have been involved with the Pro Bono Clinic at the Centre there since its opening.

They have all found the experience working at the Centre both challenging and uplifting with a wide range of clients and cases where advice is needed.

Michael McGhie says,” Feedback received by the Law Centre has been generally positive and what started modestly has continued into a third year with every intention of continuing.”

All three are very keen to continue their work and the Law Centre is now embarking on further training for advisers in debt, welfare benefits.

Giving something back to the community through pro bono work (work or time that is given for free) has been a time honoured tradition and an important part of being a lawyer.
