Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd becomes a CILEx Honorary Vice-President

29 November 2017

Lord ThomasFormer Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd has been made an honorary Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) in recognition of his support of and close association with the Institute.

Following his appointment, Lord Thomas said: “I am delighted to join CILEx as their Honorary Vice-President. In my career I have seen the growth in status of Chartered Legal Executives across England and Wales, and their mission to provide an accessible and affordable route to a legal career is one I share.

“As specialist lawyers, Chartered Legal Executives have an important role to play in the legal landscape. I have been heartened to see new opportunities open up to them in recent years – from independent practice rights, to setting up their own law firms, or entering the ranks of the judiciary. The importance of ensuring we have lawyers that are reflective of the society they serve should not be underestimated for its vital contribution to maintaining the rule of law and ensuring access to justice. I hope I can help CILEx to continue in its achievement of this wider impact.”

Lord Thomas retired as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales in October of this year. In addition to his roles as chair of the Justice in Wales Commission, and chair of the Financial Markets Law Committee, his role as honorary Vice-President of CILEx means he will be an ambassador for the institute and its members.

CILEx President, Millicent Grant said “I am thrilled that Lord Thomas has accepted the invitation to be CILEx’s Honorary Vice-President. It is a great honour for us.”

He joins CILEx’s other honorary Vice-Presidents; former Supreme Court Justice Lord Clarke, and former long-standing Council member Joyce Arram.
