CILEX partners with 5Mins.ai to launch AI Academy
16 September 2025
CILEX (The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) has partnered with AI-powered online learning platform 5Mins.ai to launch the CILEX AI Academy, delivering personalised AI training to legal professionals.
Use of generative AI by legal services organisations has doubled over the last year, from 14% in 2024 to 26% in 2025, according to research by Thomson Reuters. It found that 78% of legal professionals expect AI to become central to their work within five years, yet a considerable training gap exists, with less than half of legal organisations providing AI training to staff.
The CILEX AI Academy is designed to enable law firms and legal teams to equip staff with the skills they need for AI literacy, incorporating modules that evolve to keep pace with the rapidly changing AI landscape and that champion ethical and responsible use of AI.
The online training platform delivers bite-sized sessions on generative AI tools, prompt engineering, AI ethics, data security and professional responsibility. It allows employees to master emerging AI technologies whilst managing the associated risks to ensure both the organisation and its clients are protected.
Delivered in innovative and engaging formats either online or through a mobile app, the training platform keeps learners interested and progressing through their learning journey.
CILEX commercial director Toby Moseley says: “No one doubts the significant impact AI is having on the legal sector but outside the UK’s largest firms, many risk getting left behind as they struggle to keep on top of new developments and the urgent need to upskill staff.
“Traditional training options aren’t always able to keep up with the pace of change, so the new academy is designed to evolve to ensure that employees are trained on the most up-to-the-minute information.
“With concerns about AI hallucinations, confidentiality and ethics front of mind, the AI Academy focuses on giving employees the confidence to navigate AI ethically and safely, cultivating a culture where AI is understood across the organisation.”
Saurav Chopra, founder and CEO of 5Mins.ai, says: “Legal professionals need to master AI tools without compromising client confidentiality or professional standards. Our platform delivers this complex training through the same engagement mechanics that make social media addictive – but with content designed by legal AI experts. CILEX AI Academy means employers will be able to build genuinely AI-literate teams in weeks, not years, providing employees with cutting-edge skills and future-proofing their organisations without the need for lengthy build times or significant tech investment.”

Notes to editors:
CILEX (The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) is one of the three main professional bodies covering the legal profession in England and Wales. The approximately 18,000 -strong membership is made up of CILEX Lawyers, Chartered Legal Executives, paralegals and other legal professionals.
CILEX pioneered the non-university route into law and in 2021 launched the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), a new approach to on-the-job training that marries legal knowledge with the practical skills, behaviours and commercial awareness needed by lawyers in the 2020s.
The CPQ is a progressive qualification framework that creates a workforce of specialist legal professionals, providing a career ladder from Paralegal through to Advanced Paralegal and ultimately full qualification as a CILEX Lawyer. CILEX Lawyers can become partners in law firms, coroners, judges or advocates in open court.
CILEX members come from more diverse backgrounds than other parts of the legal profession:
- 76% of its lawyers are women
- 16% are from ethnic minority backgrounds
- 8% are Asian or Asian British
- 5% are Black or Black British
- 3% are from a mixed ethnic background
- 77% attended state schools
- 63% come from families where neither parent attended university
- Only 3% of its members have a parent who is a lawyer.
CILEX members are regulated through an independent body, CILEx Regulation. It is the only regulator covering paralegals.
