Assessor Roles

Assessor Roles

There are three main roles that a CILEx assessor can undertake:

Chief Examiner

Your role as the Chief Examiner would be to set the specified question paper, marking scheme and suggested answers in a way which ensures the valid assessment of the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

You will attend a scheduled Assessment Review Meeting (ARM) meeting where the assessment materials will be discussed to ensure that all question papers are valid and provide a fair assessment. This meeting uses Skype for Business - a link will be sent to you prior to the date of the ARM.

You are responsible for marking candidate scripts and ensuring that the standardisation of marking meets CILEx's requirements. (Marking scripts will be remunerated separately and on the basis of the number of scripts being marked). CILEx will eventually be moving to e-marking shortly.  Candidates will draft their answers electronically and these will be marked online. Assessors will be marking candidates’ answers online.

You will undertake an annual review of your subject unit specification to ensure it remains fit for purpose and current (unit specification review will be remunerated separately).

Reviser

Your role as the Reviser would be to revise the question paper, marking scheme and suggested answers set by the Chief Examiner. You will liaise with the Chief Examiner to discuss any recommended changes you have and complete a report.

You have the option to participate in and contribute to a scheduled ARM.

You will also assume the role of Script Moderator which involves revisiting and moderating samples of the Chief Examiner's marked scripts. (Moderating scripts will be remunerated separately and on the basis of the number of scripts being marked). CILEx is moving to e-marking in June 2017.  Candidates will draft their answers electronically and these will be moderated online. Assessors will be moderating candidates’ answers online.

Scrutiniser

Your role as the Scrutiniser ‘test’ the question paper by producing a marking scheme which will only be viewed by CILEx.

You will be sent the second draft question paper, and be asked to briefly draft answers in a mark scheme template.

After receiving the CE’s mark scheme and suggested answers, compare this with your own ‘test mark scheme, and highlight any issues raised through this process by recording on the Scrutiniser’s report form, which is then shared with the rest of the panel members to discuss at the ARM

You will participate in the ARM where the feedback from your Scrutinisers’ report will form the basis of the discussion, during which your recommendations will be received and considered by the Panel.

Note: Assessors will be trained before and during the term of their role. Most training will take place either online or over the phone.
