Membership Grades and Fees

CILEx offers the following membership categories, which you can join according to your experience and qualifications held.  You can register to study with CILEx at any time of the year and this has been made easier by our online membership application service.

Membership Registration Grades and Fees 2014/2015

Note:  There will be a one-off initial registration fee of £40 (non-refundable) which is payable in addition to the below fees.

Student member – for those wishing to enter the legal profession; those who have no relevant legal qualification; or those with less than three years’ work experience of a predominantly legal nature. Annual subscription fees of £50 are payable.

Affiliate member – for those with at least one CILEx level 3 or 4 unit qualification, or who have completed a relevant legal qualification at level 2, or gained at least three years’ work of a predominantly legal nature. Annual subscription fees of £119 are payable.

Associate member – for those who have completed their CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, or who are graduates with Qualifying Law Degrees. Associate members will be entitled to use the designatory letters ACILEx after their name. Annual subscription fees of £168 are payable. * 8 Hours of continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the additional professionalism element.

Graduate member – for those who have completed both their CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and their CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice; our Graduate Fast-track Diploma; or who are Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (formerly the Bar Vocational Course or BVC) graduates. Graduate members will be entitled to use the designatory letters GCILEx after their name.To register for the first time the fee will be a total of £640 which includes the registration, annual subscription and exemption fees, thereafter the annual subscription fees of £200 are payable.

* 12 Hours of continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the additional professionalism element.

Graduate members who wish to go on to become a qualified Chartered Legal Executive lawyer -  will need to satisfy the requirements for qualifying employment.

Fellow – when you have successfully completed a period of qualifying employment, you will become a Fellow, a qualified lawyer and eligible to use the term Chartered Legal Executive lawyer and use the designatory letters FCILEx. You will be invited to attend the CILEx Graduation ceremony. Annual subscription fees of £318.50 are payable.

* 9 CPD outcomes with at least 1 outcome in professionalism

To be admitted you need to have:

  • passed the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice qualifications (or been exempted from them, or hold equivalent qualifications);
  • complete and submit the Work Based Learning logbook and portfolio of evidence, further details on completing the application can be found here. The WBL application form can be found here.
  • Completed a minimum of three years employment experience in legal work, including at least one years experience which falls after completion of the Cilex Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice. The 2 years qualifying employment immediately proceeding an application for Fellowship must be served consecutively.

Other Fees

Discounted fees for eligible members outside of the main membership grades:

Dual Qualified  -  £99 with a Journal / £50 without a Journal 

Non-Practising  -  £79 with a Journal / £30 without a Journal 

Retired  -  £30 with a Journal

Maternity/Paternity for up to 2 years  -  £50 with a Journal
