LETR Symposium invites debate: limited places available
Issued by the SRA on 1 June 2012.
The Legal Education and Training Review (LETR) Research
team, in conjunction with the Solicitors Regulation Authority, is
organising a Symposium in Manchester between 10-11 July
2012 to publicise progress to date and encourage debate on
the emerging issues coming out of the Review.
The event is an opportunity for practitioners, education and
training providers, consumers, regulators and commentators to come
together to discuss the main issues addressed by the Review jointly
commissioned by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), Bar
Standards Board (BSB) and IPS (ILEX Professional
Standards).
Key themes that the delegates will be exploring over the two days
are the changing market for legal services; the future role of
regulation; and the educational requirements for the providers of
legal services including competencies, routes to qualification,
future roles and social mobility issues.
An impressive line-up of leading experts in international legal,
regulatory and education fields will be giving plenary speeches at
the event including:-
- Professor Richard Susskind OBE, British author, speaker, and
independent adviser to international professional firms and
national governments
- Professor Julia Black, The London School of Economics and
Political Science
- Steve Mark, Legal Services Commissioner, New South Wales
- Professor Wes Pue, Nemetz Professor of Legal History at the
University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
Over the two days, breakout sessions will be held to debate
specific aspects and scenarios when delegates will be invited for
their views with other high profile experts, including a Question
Time’ Panel chaired by legal journalist, Joshua Rozenberg, widely
described as Britain's best known commentator on the law.
Dame Janet Gaymer, Co-Chair of the LETR Consultation Steering
Panel, said: "The Symposium will be an opportunity for
practitioners and owners of legal services, education and training
providers, consumers, regulators and commentators to come together
to debate the key issues addressed by the Legal Education and
Training Review and we are looking forward to an enthusiastic
exchange of views.”
Professor Julian Webb added: "We are pleased with the level of
interest we’ve received in the event and delegates will be able
both to hear from experts and contribute their own thoughts over
the course of the two days.
"We are keen to engage with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure
that the Review takes everyone’s views into account for the ongoing
research programme which will culminate in a report in December
this year.”
